Plastic Free A Guarda School Project

During the months of November and December we have been talking about plastics in the Biology and English lessons. These are some of the topics we have talked about:

- How are plastics produced?
- What resources are necessary to produce plastic?
- Different types of plastic.
- How long does it take for plastic to decompose?
- What are the effects of the use of plastic on the environment?
- The Great Garbage Patch.
- The life of a plastic bottle.
- How to reduce the use of plastic. Alternatives.
- Many important Rs: Reject, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle, Rot, Respect...
- How to use the yellow, blue and green recycling bins.
- What can we all do at school, at home, in shops...?

A Zero Waste School

Zero Waste in our school
1 ESO - SCHOOL RESEARCH PROJECT

RESEARCH AND SURVEY:

A: In the hall…
- How many waste bins are there in the school hall?
- Are there any recycling bins for paper or plastic?
- Is there a container for glass?
- Is there a box for batteries?
- Is there a place to leave the bottle lids?
- Would you recycle plastic and paper if we had recycling bins in the hall?

B: In the canteen…
- Are there any recycling bins?
- Open one of the bins: What can you see inside?

C: In the school…
- Is there a compost bucket or a composter?
- Where do you put the remnants of your snacks?
- Where do the canteen owners put the food remnants?
- Is there a drinking fountain?
- Do you drink water from the taps? Why? Why not?
- Would you drink water from the taps if it were better?

D: In your classroom…
- How many people in your group try to reduce the use of paper or reuse it?
- Is there a paper bin?
- Would you recycle paper if you had a paper bin in the classroom?

E: You and your classmates…
- How many people are there in your class?
- How many people in your group buy water bottles or drink cans at the canteen?
- How many people in your group use a reusable drinking bottle?
- How many people in your group use a cloth bag or plastic box for their snacks?
- How many people in your group recycle the paper and plastic of their snacks?
- What are the reasons why some people don't recycle it?

 THINK AND WRITE YOUR CONCLUSIONS

What can the school do to reduce the use of plastic products?

What can the school do to promote recycling and composting?

What can you do to reduce the use of plastics?

What can you ask your schoolmates to do to help the environment in the school?

A Message from the Gyre

"Until my ghastly tale is told,
This heart within me burns."

What is going on in the North Pacific Ocean?

• A Gyre is a natural vortex of wind and currents that rotates in a clockwise direction in the northern hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the southern hemisphere. Gyres create a whirlpool effect so that plastic debris floating on the sea collects there, in the centre of the vortex.
• There are 5 major Gyres in the oceans worldwide. They all contain plastic and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that resist photochemical, biological and chemical degradation.
• The North Pacific Gyre, also known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, is an "island" twice the size of Texas that we can find between the coast of California and Hawaii. 11 million tons (and growing) of floating plastic covers that area of nearly 5 million square miles.

The following video shows some of the consequences of allowing plastic waste reach the sea.
